THE BUILDING

The Glass House Amsterdam is being built where the Pieter de Hoochstraat and the Hobbemakade used to connect by the Tenierstraat. The municipal telephone exchange, a richly detailed industrial building, formed the end of the block until 1909. The design strives to blend the new construction into a natural unity with the PTT-building, which is still standing. The street façades will be a modern, abstract translation of the existing façades. Mainly the dimensions, storey-height and material use will be replicated. The very transparent garden façades, around the inner garden, connect to the more informal atmosphere inside the block, which is typical for Amsterdam.

The new property will be formed by two main buildings joined by a connecting section, both of which will be provided with an elevator. Parking will be located underneath the building. Storage facilities will also be accommodated.

The façades facing the street will seamlessly connect with the surroundings and radiate Amsterdam around 1900. In contrast, the façades on the inner side will be fully transparent and consist of glass, oak sills and steel. The staircases will form a contemporary reference to the original style of construction. The project The Glass House Amsterdam consists of ten apartments.
